Welcome to the Ethnic Minority Achievement site, this site aims to provide support to Local Authorities (LAs) and schools by:

  • updating you on Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) work;
  • providing documentation for ethnic background data collection;
  • sharing successful experiences of schools and LAs in their work to raise standards; and 
  • signposting useful links and publications which provide information and research on minority ethnic pupils educational achievement.

We hope you find this site informative, and that it clearly shows how we are working to narrow the attainment gaps of BME pupils and helps you to make a difference and contribute to that agenda.

DCSF Guidance: Recording and Reporting Racist Incidents 2006 (PDF 340 KB)
Racism is a problem affecting society as a whole: it is not something that occurs in isolation in schools and one key step towards creating a safe learning environment is ensuring that all forms of racism are tackled firmly as and when they occur, because no child can feel safe in an environment where racism is not challenged. The DCSF guidance document: 'Recording and Reporting Racist Incidents' (2006) intends to offer advice and case studies to maintained schools and local authorities on how to improve procedures for recording and reporting racist incidents. The guidance supports the Home Office document 'Community Cohesion Education Standards for Schools' (2004) and is also intended to be read alongside the DCSF advice on 'Bullying around racism, religion and culture' (2006), which addresses ways to both respond to and prevent racist bullying.

These materials aim to support schools who may be working with newly arrived isolated learners of English as an additional language in settings which may have little or no access to expert Ethnic Minority Achievement support.
