This research, commissioned by the DfES, was published in October 2006. The aim of the evaluation was to establish the effectiveness of the project in delivering whole school change to raise African Caribbean achievement.

This research, commissioned by the Department, was published in June 2004. It nvestigated the educational needs of mixed heritage pupils with specific reference to the barriers to achievement faced by White/Black Caribbean pupils.

This guidance, published in May 2004, addresses multicultural issues and the difficulties of isolation which can present minority ethnic pupils with additional barriers to their achievement.

This document, published in March 2003, outlines the Government's commitment to continuing to raise standards for all young people whatever their ethnic or cultural background and ensuring that all education policies truly address the needs of every pupil in every school.

The Guide, published in July 2003, offers advice and guidance to schools and LAs on how to raise the attainment and achievement of Gypsy/Traveller pupils.

This comprehensive guidance has been produced to support teachers in their work with these children and contains information ranging from the role of LEAs through to advice on supporting individual communities. Further guidance linked to 'Aiming High' has been issued in 2004.

Understanding the views of young people, and learning from them, is essential to The Prince's Trust. This is a link to the research area of their site, where you can access a summary of the study "The Way It Is" published in April 2002. Following the success of "It's Like That", this study continues querying the attitudes and aspirations of disadvantaged young people, shifting the focus to young people who've been excluded from compulsory education, who have left care, or who are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

The introduction of the Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant (EMAG) in April 1999 was evaluated in Managing Support for the Attainment of Pupils from Minority Ethnic Groups, published by OFSTED in October 2001. Funding for training for both mainstream and specialist staff is one of the key features of the new grant. The report drew on a range of evidence on the impact of the new grant on training opportunities, but direct evaluation of training events was not undertaken. This booklet is intended to help inspectors, headteachers and staff to evaluate subjects for pupils aged 11-16. It gives guidance on evaluating standards and achievement, teaching and learning, and other factors that are likely to have an important bearing on what is achieved.

This research is published on the General Teaching Council for England website. The project describes what some schools are doing to facilitate success for minority ethnic groups and to consider how far these might be transferable between different schools with different intakes and in different contexts. These schools were identified as successful in raising the attainment of all children or of particular ethnic groups within them.

Improving Practice: A whole school approach to raising the achievement of African Caribbean youth:This report provides strategies for working with young African Caribbean people who are under-achieving at school and who face alienation and exclusion as a consequence.                                                                                              Complementing Teachers:This report offers practical guidance on the promotion of race equality and cultural diversity within the classroom, and has been compiled by a working group of teachers and other educationalists. It includes CD-Rom with downloadable lesson plans and activities.

The Runnymede Trust has created  ‘The  Real Histories Directory’ as an online resource tool for teachers, parents, pupils and the wider community to support  teaching and learning about cultural diversity across the UK.  It contains information on resources such as culturally diverse toys and games, bookshops, museums, archives, individual performance artists and organisations that provide useful resources.  People are encouraged to submit information on any useful resources that they are aware of, free of charge, to the site.

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity dedicated to building a literate nation. The 'resource' area of this site includes a range of resources for EAL, Multiculturalism and international issues.

The Supplementary School Support Service project has come to an end following over three years of successful support for the sector by CfBT and the African Schools Association.  This website retains very useful links and guidance for supplementary schools and will be updated with new material in the future.

Channel 4's Black and Asian History Map is a searchable gateway to websites that hold information on the black and Asian presence in British history. The map is an entry point to a whole host of sources and is a useful tool for those who intend to explore the black and Asian presence. It invites the audience to participate, and encourages and helps the users to create their own web sites or to provide linkages to other sites so that these sites can be part of the ever-growing material on the map. It is a great educational resource with online competitions, a forum to share ideas, a black and Asian history game and a wide selection of useful links. Information on this website has been used successfully to support Black History Month projects.

The Refugee Council is the largest organisation in the UK working with asylum seekers and refugees. This site offers some useful materials on refugee children and bilingualism, for schools to use.

This Statistical First Release (SFR 04/2004) provides 2002 (final) and 2003 (provisional) information on Key Stage National Curriculum assessments and GCSE/GNVQ achievements of young people in England by different pupil characteristics, specifically gender, ethnicity,eligibility for free school meals (FSM), special education needs (SEN) and English as an additional language (EAL). This Statistical First Release (SFR 04/2003) provides summary findings of the most recent survey of 16 year olds from the latest Youth Cohort Study (YCS) carried out in spring 2002. This provides Year 11 attainment, study aim, and activity of 16 year olds broken down by socio-demographic characteristics, such as gender, ethnic group, socio-economic group, truancy and exclusion.

This Statistical First Release (SFR 05/2003) provides summary findings of the most recent survey of 18 year olds carried out in spring 2002. The survey looks at the activities, qualifications, and study aims at 18, trends in educational attainment and activity at 18, and transitions between the ages of 16, 17 and 18, including analysis by ethnicity.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, (QCA) has published Respect for all: Reflecting cultural diversity through the national curriculum, a web-based project by teachers for teachers which exemplifies how schools are meeting the statutory requirement relating to inclusion in the national curriculum under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act of 2000.

This Ethnic Minority Attainment (EMA) Portal has been developed by Birmingham, Leeds, and Manchester Local Education Authorities with the help of the DfES, to provide resources and support to enable every pupil to fulfil their potential. The teaching and learning resources focus on children and young people with English as an additional language and those from minority ethnic backgrounds.
