Guidance and InformationIn April 2004, the DfES published Aiming High: Guidance on Supporting the Education of Asylum Seeking and Refugee Children: A Guide to Good Practice (PDF 3.85MB). This guidance provides information that ranges from the role of local authorities through to advice on how to support individual communities. An increasing amount of interesting and inspiring material is being developed. The Teacher Development Agency website: http://www.multiverse.ac.uk/ is a resource for teachers, trainee teachers and trainers to help enhance the education provision for pupils from diverse ethnic, cultural and language backgrounds.
There is now a great deal of good practice that has been developed and is available to teachers to support children whose first language is other than English as well as guidance aimed at supporting new arrivals. Among this material is the curriculum guidance "Pathways to Learning for New Arrivals" produced by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to help teachers and other school staff to respond to the needs of new arrivals. This guidance offers information on all aspects of integrating newly arrived pupils, including ways to adapt the curriculum and sources of further information. "Pathways to Learning" can be found on the QCA website http://www.qca.org.uk/8476.html
