The IU and EMAU Design Competition

E-Learning and Mobility Project 3

The IU and EMAU Design Competition

Background

On the 17th of March 2005, all Traveller Education Services were invited to put forward proposals to bid for funding of up to £15,000. This is to support innovative ideas which provide creative and innovative solutions to help with work on building more effective relationships between schools and Gypsy and Traveller parents and communities.

This may involve, for example:

  • Working with schools to ensure they have systems in place to proactively engage with Gypsy and Traveller parents at a very early stage;
  • Ensuring parents have a clear understanding about what to expect from schools and what schools expect from their pupils and parents;
  • Encouraging parents that education at school is the best possible chance in life for their children;
  • Working with school staff and other agencies to ensure all myths are dispelled and bullying and racist incidents are tackled quickly and effectively.

The successful projects will run from June 2005 to March 2006

Evaluation

Each successful Traveller Education Service will be expected to evaluate their projects to determine the extent to which they have been successful in achieving their individual aims and objectives. The idea is to identify examples of good practice and to provide case studies for dissemination to a wider audience. They will also be required to provide updates on their work and to share lessons learned in real time where appropriate.

The Successful Proposals

The following projects were chosen to start in June 2005 and be completed by March 2006. We will place more details about these projects on this site in July and update them during the year.

LEEDS

This contains active involvement by Gypsy and Traveller communities in the education of all children by building on their traditional skills as story tellers.
It has the potential to provide very positive outcomes for all children in school and will produce a DVD of the processes and stories produced so good practice can be shared nationally.

CAMDEN

This involves a contribution towards the production of a DVD to engage and inform parents about what their children can expect from schools and what schools expect from parents and pupils.

HERTFORDSHIRE

This project includes the SNAP Theatre Company and 4 Local Authorities. It has great potential to engage large numbers of parents and children from all communities. It offers a good range of activities including workshops, performances, seminars and training. It offers dignity and respect to Gypsy and Traveller communities and also adult education benefits.

BOLTON

This project will work with parents to identify issues/practices that are perceived to create a barrier to formal education, achievement and attendance. It will include a voluntary panel of parents supported by a project worker to research these identified areas with a range of Primary and Secondary schools (60) and try to identify good practice and ways of moving forward. There will be a specific focus on encouraging communication between Gypsy and Traveller parents and school staff.
