E-Learning and Mobility Project 3

E-Learning and Mobility Project 3

ELAMP3

Background

During 2004/05 the National Association of Teachers of Travellers is managing the second year of the ELAMP project 'Using ICT to support distance learning'. It is funded by the Department and supported by other partners. We are currently working with 10 local authorities and over 60 children. This project offers laptops and datacards plus good quality distance learning packs to children who travel frequently.

In 2003/04 the project focused mainly on Showmen children in the primary phase. In 2004/05 the project was extended to include Showmen children at Secondary school and Gypsy and Traveller children.

The project enables pupils to keep in close contact with their teachers, get work marked promptly and new challenges set. Traveller children also keep in touch with their peers. Our experience in 2003/04 has shown that students engaged in this way of working have been well motivated and undertaken more distance learning work to a higher level than ever before. Participant students have also lost less ground academically and re-integrated back into their base schools more easily and resumed their studies with fewer difficulties than in previous years.

Additional local authorities have been so impressed by the results that they are becoming involved also.

Evaluation

A final evaluation report written by Ken Marks, Sheffield University (sponsored by the Nuffield Foundation) will be available early in 2006.

The evaluation report below sets out to summarise the experiences of E-LAMP2, (2003/04) a project which sought to explore the use of laptops and GPRS datacards to enhance distance learning for very mobile Traveller pupils. It also draws on experiences from a parallel initiative in Leicestershire.
