Pupils whose first language is known (or believed) to be English - 5,622,910 (86.5 per cent). Pupils whose first language is known (or believed) to be other than English - 856,670 (13.2 per cent). Pupils whose first language is unclassified - 19,280 (0.3 per cent). |

| May 2009: A consultation on the first draft of the strategy for the development EAL |
| A consultation on the first draft of the strategy for the development of English as an additional language (EAL) workforce in schools is being run and will come to an end in September 2009. A second round of the consultation will begin in November 2009.
DCSF commissioned the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) in conjunction with the Institute of Education (IoE) to develop a workforce strategy for teaching of English as an additional language. |
