A range of guidance will be published in the first week of September to support target setting at different stages, from individual pupil targets to those that are set at Local Authority level. There are particular references to the target setting process for schools throughout the year.

August 2009: The latest statistics on schools, pupils and their characteristics
The latest statistics on schools, pupils and their characteristics, covering ethnicity and first language has now been published. Pupils whose first language is known (or believed) to be English - 5,622,910 (86.5 per cent). Pupils whose first language is known (or believed) to be other than English - 856,670 (13.2 per cent). Pupils whose first language is unclassified - 19,280 (0.3 per cent).

May 2009: A consultation on the first draft of the strategy for the development EAL
A consultation on the first draft of the strategy for the development of English as an additional language (EAL) workforce in schools is being run and will come to an end in September 2009. A second round of the consultation will begin in November 2009. DCSF commissioned the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) in conjunction with the Institute of Education (IoE) to develop a workforce strategy for teaching of English as an additional language.

December 2008: Exam results for BME pupils in 2008
The Statistical First Release 'National Curriculum Assessment, GCSE and equivalent attainment and Post-16 attainment by pupil characteristics, in England, 2008' has now been published and shows that exam results for minority ethnic pupils continue to improve.
