Schools Minister Derek Twigg welcomed the data, saying that minority ethnic groups were making great progress and that evidence showing that the gap was closing between Black, Pakistani and Bangladeshi pupils and other pupils at GCSE and equivalent was also encouraging.
The Statistical First Release National Curriculum Assessment, GCSE and equivalent attainment and Post-16 attainment by pupil characteristics, in England, 2004, shows the percentage of pupils getting five or more grades A* to C at GCSE and equivalent:
- White: up 1 percentage point to 52.3 per cent
- Black Caribbean: up 2.8 percentage points to 35.7 per cent.
- Black African: up 2.6 percentage points to 43.3 per cent.
- Indian: up 1.4 percentage points to 66.6 per cent
- Pakistani: up 3.7 percentage points to 45.2 per cent
- Bangladeshi: up 2.9 percentage points to 48.4 per cent
- Chinese: down 0.6 percentage points to 74.2 per cent but still performing considerably higher than any other group
- All pupils: up 1.2 percentage points to 51.9 per cent
