•Improvement of Year 8 written skills in MFL and ICT skills

•Involvement of other family schools in the LEA to share good practice and widen opportunity for learning
•Stipulation that all pupils involved were MFL level 4
Offer insight to Higher education

What was planned?

Linked with World of Glass museum in St Helen’s to produce leaflets and web-page for use in the museum with foreign visitors

What was done and when?

•Pupils investigated the use of MFL in commercially produced material from tourist information, including a lecture of local tourism industry in at JMU and a visit to Liverpool Tourist office.
•Pupils analysed the ‘language of tourism’ in their own and foreign language
•Pupils worked with a brief at the World of Glass museum
•Pupils investigated brochure/leaflet design
•Pupils produced mini-brochures/leaflets and a web-page in MFL
•Programme attached gives details of timing.
•Samples of material in French and German are attached
•Problems encountered through drop in pupil numbers in the second week – due to pre-booked holidays.  Next summer school will be in one week with longer hours
•Need greater access to computers at an earlier stage – ie drafting.  New MFL suite at Cowley will be used for next summer school
•Greater access to digital camera and video

What has been the impact and how verified?

•All pupils attained level 6 in ICT
•Awareness raised of importance of MFL – in fact pupils could not believe the lack of information for foreign tourists in the appropriate language in a city such as Liverpool
•Cowley pupils who participated have all achieved level 6 in Year 9 assessments

What has been learnt and next steps?

•Critical factors for success are:-

•Improved communication between family of schools
•Increased participation by other schools
•Co-operation of outside agencies for the authentic context
•Calibre of staffing
•Limitation to one week only
•Earlier release of funding so we can start planning earlier and therefore encourage more participants
•This year we will run the project as a cross-phase venture with primary schools and use the City of Culture as a start point.
