School Ofsted Quotes

Ofsted is the inspectorate for children and learners in England. It contributes to the provision of better education and care through effective inspection and regulation covering childcare, schools, colleges, children's services, teacher training and youth work.

The following are extracts from school and area Ofsted reports.  If you have an extract you would like included on this site, please email it to learning.mentors@cwdcouncil.org.uk entitled "School LM Ofsted report quotes", and please include reference to the date and school concerned.  Please ensure that the report has been published, and make reference to this in your email.

Enfield EiC Inspection, 2005
"The work of Learning Mentors was never less than good in all schools visited and is good overall with some outstanding practice. Learning Mentors are promoting inclusion and achievement through the development of positive attitudes to learning, raising self-esteem and improving social skills in the pupils with whom they work. This work is helping to reduce exclusions, improve attendance and raise standards of attainment. Learning Mentors are often closely and effectively linked with the work of Learning Support Units (LSU). In some cases there is very good evaluation of the effectiveness of the work of Learning Mentors, which is informing planning for further improvement. LEA led Professional development opportunities and evaluation exercises contribute to the good quality work. To improve further the effectiveness of the strand, schools should extend the degree to which Learning Mentors share good practice with other staff in schools."

All Saints Community College, Newcastle upon Tyne, January 2004
"Outstanding Practice: Learning Mentors take an analytical approach to supporting students.  A skilled team of learning mentors works very closely with heads of year and subject leaders. They begin by analysing data in considerable detail to identify which students may be underachieving. They carefully compare their analysis with what subject teachers are seeing, so as to judge more accurately which students are at risk. They then judiciously monitor and advise individual students ensuring that they do not fall behind. They often evaluate all their work carefully so that they know precisely which of their activities are most successful in keeping students on track."

Sacred Heart High (Girls), Newcastle upon Tyne, May 2004
"Learning Mentors also gave very good support to pupils of all abilities to help them understand how to improve the quality of their work. They were particularly successful in supporting those who might otherwise fail to complete their schooling."

St Joseph's Catholic Infant School, Waltham Forest, Sept 05
"pupils benefit from the very high quality help given by a learning mentor. Her very good knowledge of each individual's circumstances and the sensitive way in which she works, puts pupils at ease and contributes strongly to their very good progress."
