Local Materials Developed to Support Induction Training and Induction Standards

Common Induction Standards and CWDC Induction Training Support Materials

Coventry Materials:

Anthony Cox has kindly provided us with downloadable examples of support materials developed in Coventry to facilitate the use of CWDC induction standards with staff following the CWDC induction training programme.  The materials are downloadable below.

Attachment 2: Summary of work based activities

He has also provided the following explanatory notes.

The material is used solely with school/education based practitioners who are predominantly Learning Mentors at present.

It is based on the principle that responsibility for assessing practitioners as "safe and competent to work with children and young people" against the CWDC Induction Standards is a shared one between the school or service Line Manager and the centre based Training, Support and Development Coordinator (TSDC).

The model asks school/service based Line Managers to undertake specified Work Based Activities (WBAs) but not all.

Other WBAs are assessed either through their inclusion in a Trainee Portfolio or through professional discussion with the TSDC.

The portfolio must include evidence from both formal training sessions and all WBAs.

The TSDC co-ordinates and directs this activity at 8 half-day support sessions which follow, at roughly 3-weekly intervals, the six-day Induction Training.  These sessions also include supplementary training as required.

An amended version of the Induction Standards Assessment Grid (below) is used to "sign off" different evidence against the Induction Standards.

The WBA's are coded as to relevant Induction Standards, are cross-referenced to the Induction Standards Assessment Grid and identify which are the responsibility of the Line Manager.

Line Manager and TSDC agree the satisfactory meeting of the Induction Standards by individual practitioners using the portfolio as a secure evidence base.

The whole process is timed to last approximately 6 months, or, in terms of working weeks, the 24 week period for Induction recommended by CWDC.

Anthony also points out that the above is under revision at the moment particularly as regards links to a formal Induction Plan.
