Excellence in Cities (EiC) is designed to remedy successive failures to address the educational problems of the major cities.
General Information sub_rule
The aim of EiC is to drive up standards in schools in major cities higher and faster to match the standards of excellence found in our best schools.
Policy sub_rule
There are seven main policy strands:
  City Learning Centres
(CLCs) - setting up 30 CLCs set up by September 2000

Specialist schools
giving priority to EiC areas

Gifted and talented children
The first stage of the national strategy for the education of gifted and talented pupils is the implementation of the gifted and talented children strand of the Excellence in Cities initiative.

Beacon schools
setting up at least one new Beacon school in each LEA in EiC target areas each year between 1999/2000 and 2001/2002

Learning Mentors
giving every young person in target areas access to a mentor if they need one

Learning Support Units
(LSUs) - giving all schools in target areas access to an LSU

Education Action Zones
(EAZs) - setting up small EAZs focused on a single secondary school within EiC partnerships

Excellence Challange
is the Government's new initiative designed to address the under-representation of students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Higher Education.

Excellence Clusters
Clusters bring the benefits of EiC to smaller areas of deprivation, including coastal towns, deprived rural areas, ex-coalfield and industrial towns.
