Teaching and learning
Apart from looking at teachers' planning, you can learn much about how well speaking and listening is being taught from discussions with your teachers and from observations of some of their lessons.
To help with this process try customising and using these prompts either in a department meeting discussion or when observing lessons with a focus on speaking and listening. The prompts can be customised to your own needs and some observations could be carried out by other members of the department.
Observing and discussing the scope and quality of the teaching of speaking and listening in the classroom (27 KB)
After you have had a department discussion, or have carried out a series of lesson observations, jot down on the Speaking and listening review sheet any elements that you think need developing or improving. You can then use those observations, together with other information on speaking and listening that you have gathered, to hold a discussion with your department to help you and colleagues:
- evaluate department practice
- plan new teaching approaches
- identify professional development needs
