Introduction

Purpose

The purpose of these study materials is to help you:

• Consider the effectiveness of your current practice with teaching speaking and listening
  
• Consider areas of the teaching and assessment of speaking and listening that may be new or unfamiliar to you
  
• Understand how certain methods for teaching speaking and listening contribute to pupils’ learning and skill development
  
• Identify areas of your practice that you would wish to develop
• Consider and try out suggestions to improve your practice

Choosing your route

To help you decide which sections would be of interest to you, try the following:

• Look at some of the three-minute videos of lesson summaries found in the Lessons section, and note down any aspects that you would like to follow-up
• How much of the practice and content described in the unit is or is not well established in your teaching?
• Which of the areas of teaching and assessing speaking and listening, which are not that well established, do you think will have most impact on your teaching and the learning of your pupils?
