Discuss with the governing body or chair of governors

The home-school agreement is the responsibility of the governing body. In many schools the governors may delegate the responsibility for organising consultation and the drawing up of the agreement, but it is very important that governors be closely involved in the process.

The guidance states that:

Before attempting to draw up an agreement, governing bodies are encouraged to review their home-school policy.

Click here for the section on partnership with parents, which suggests ways to do this.

Even if someone else is managing the process, governors, and particularly parent governors, may:

  • have views on how to take the consultation process forward

  • wish to attend consultation or working party meetings

At Archbishop Thurstan CE Secondary School, Hull, the Chair of the Governing Body was a member of the 'Parents in Partnership' working group. This group was responsible for producing the home school agreement and promoting other initiatives to encourage effective home-school links.

  • volunteer to approach parents individually to seek out views.

At Keir Hardie Primary School, Newham, members of staff and some of the governors spent time in the school yard consulting parents at the beginning and end of the school day. This personal approach to parents proved effective.

A member of the governing body should be given a specific brief for issues associated with the agreement.
