Year 3 Literacy Support: Intensifying Support Programme
The Year 3 Literacy Support programme was trialled in schools in 11 local authorities as part of the provision of the Intensifying Support Programme.
Year 3 Literacy Support completes the Primary National Strategy’s range of intervention programmes designed to support the progress of children who, with additional support, can work at age related expectations within the Framework for teaching. The programme shares the principles and structures of Early Literacy Support (ELS Year 1) and Further Literacy Support (FLS Year 5). In particular the Year 3 Literacy Support programme is designed to sustain momentum and support transition from KS1 to KS2.
In addition to quality first teaching in the literacy session, the group identified for Year 3 Literacy Support receives a planned programme of support, including lessons from the teacher and teaching assistant, independent tasks and optional supplementary homework.
The programme comprises 64 literacy support sessions designed to revisit key objectives from the NLS Framework for teaching. These sessions are organised into 3 modules each lasting between four and six weeks. The modules are planned around two- week blocks involving the teacher and teaching assistant working in partnership. Screening for the programme takes place towards the end of the first term. The taught programme runs for 16 weeks starting in the second term of the year.
