Using ICT to support mathematics
Information and communication technology (ICT) plays an increasingly important role in all our lives and it is no surprise that it is now an integral part of the National Curriculum. In mathematics, as in other subjects, the National Curriculum identifies opportunities for using ICT in the classroom.
This ICT feature looks in more detail at how ICT can be used to support mathematics teaching and learning in the primary school. Much of what is here is based on the National Numeracy Strategy training pack, ' Using ICT to support mathematics in primary schools'1. The pack, which has been jointly developed with the British Educational Communication and Technology Agency (BECTa), contains training resources supported by a video and exemplar software on a CD-ROM.
An introductory article, 'Countdown to success', by Janice Staines of BECTa sets the scene by outlining some of the ways in which we have seen ICT used in the daily mathematics lesson. The two case studies, from schools involved in the video, give further exemplification and also provide a teacher's perspective.
1 Look in the Publications section of this Web site for details of how to order a free copy of this pack.
