What is it?
Supporting children with gaps in their mathematical understanding is a new Primary National Strategy publication which includes extensive teaching materials to support further development in working with children who have gaps in their mathematical understanding.
The leaflet, Targeting support: Implementing interventions for children with significant difficulties in mathematics, giving further information about the new Primary National Strategy publication and the research background, is downloadable from this site.
The pack is the culmination of work with schools in around 27 LEAs from Autumn 2003 onwards. As a result of feedback during the pilot phase, this resource has evolved in a revised form from the draft materials which were available on the pilot website. The Strategy is grateful to all those who have contributed to this process.
In the words of one child, a Year 4 boy, whose teacher has been using the pilot materials, 'It made me feel happy. It gave me a warm feeling in my tummy because I could do it. It helped me to do division because I couldn’t do it and now I can.'
