What is it?
In July 2004, the government published its response to Adrian Smith's inquiry, Making mathematics count. The inquiry and the government's response seek to address concerns about standards in mathematics, the declining number of young people choosing to continue to study mathematics and the consequent implications for the supply of mathematics teachers. The government's response was clear that the National Strategies are the primary vehicle for driving attainment, motivation and engagement in mathematics from the ages of three to fourteen. All those who are part of programmes supported by the Primary National Strategy therefore have a key role to play.
The Primary Strategy funds the work of numeracy consultants and the '3+2' mathematics course. It also has three substantial programmes, all designed to support schools in raising standards in English and mathematics.
They are the:
- Primary Leadership Programme
- Intensifying Support Programme
- Primary Strategy Learning Networks
This leaflet outlines the background to the progress made by the National Numeracy Strategy and the current priorities to build on improvement and achieve high standards in mathematics.
