What is it?
Between March and July 2004, a collaborative pilot research project, Raising boys’ achievements in writing, was undertaken jointly by the Primary National Strategy and the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA). The pilot project was undertaken in Birmingham, Essex and Medway.
This practitioner-based project was designed to provide a focused, but substantial and reliable evidence base drawn from activities designed to raise boys’ achievements in writing. The project work took the form of three-week integrated teaching units for literacy. The teachers involved were all leading teachers or expert practitioners so that their practice is recognised as of a high standard. Teacher research groups of eight to ten teachers in Birmingham, Essex and Medway, worked on teaching units designed to raise boys’ engagement, motivation and achievements in writing using either:
- visual stimuli including integrated technologies
or
- drama and other speaking and listening activities.
