What is it?
This page contains downloadable resources to support you in affirming your practice in helping every Year 6 child succeed in the statutory tests.
These materials could be used as a checklist to confirm the practice you currently have in place or to prompt discussion among the senior leadership team and teachers in upper Key Stage 2.
The materials outline:
- key leadership actions to help ensure the test week in May is a positive experience for all
- review questions to check the areas each child most needs to focus upon
- review questions to analyse approaches to teaching and learning
- prompts to gauge approaches to helping children approach the tests with confidence
- support materials to aid planning and teaching
The following text could be used to help parents support their children before and during the test period:
Some ideas for supporting your child before and during the Year 6 tests
When talking with your child about the Year 6 exams try:
- asking about what is going well and why
- looking at problems from a positive perspective
- listening carefully and pausing to make sure your child has every opportunity to say what he or she is thinking
- helping your child to spot connections in his or her learning, between subjects or between learning at home and at school.
You can also describe your own learning experiences to show your child what is possible. You can talk about:
- how you prefer to tackle challenges in learning
- times you were successful in learning and how you went about it
- some of the strategies you use when you are trying to learn something.
