What is it?
This module has been developed as part of a series of induction training materials for teaching assistants. The six training sessions contained in this module have been developed to ensure that teaching assistants are familiar with the National Numeracy Strategy and how it affects their role in the classroom. The document also gives an overview of the Framework for teaching mathematics.
Session 1 covers how to make mathematics fun, the structure and delivery of the National Numeracy Strategy’s three-part mathematics lesson and key features of the National Numeracy Strategy. It also looks at the Framework, with a view to familiarising assistants with a yearly teaching programme and relevant terminology.
Session 2 examines language and mathematics, exploring the language of learning mathematics and the importance of questioning children and listening to their responses.
Session 3 gives an overview of the approach to calculations adopted by the National Numeracy Strategy.
Sessions 4 and 5 examine the role of the assistant in the mental and oral starter of the daily mathematics lesson and in the main teaching activity of the lesson.
Finally, session 6 examines the needs of reception children and the possible roles an assistant can play in a reception class.
The session materials contain overhead projection transparencies, activities and handouts for group work and suggestions for games and activities in the classroom, as well as guidance on teaching pupils with English as an additional language.
