What is it?
This is an exciting and innovative ICT based resource created to support those teaching mathematics in primary schools. It has been designed to:
- support early professional development of trainee teachers, NQTs and others new to primary teaching;
- develop understanding of high quality teaching and learning and of how to plan effectively for the teaching of mathematics within the context of the primary curriculum;
- ensure understanding of key messages related to learning and teaching associated with the Primary National Strategy, and the ability to work productively with Strategy materials.
Contents: NNS DVD: a compilation of key NNS video sequences. These video sequences are linked to both the Nature of primary mathematics and the units of study. NNS CDROM: Models and images
Interactive CDROM: a multi-media based and easy to navigate resource providing the learner with access to an electronic resources library and an interactive study centre.
The library: NNS publications alongside other materials including: TTA NQT Induction Standards, The National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Mathematics, Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, Unit Plans, Interactive Teaching programmes and recent articles which discuss the effective teaching of mathematics. It is navigable by keywords.
The nature of primary mathematics: a range of activities focussed on the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be a successful teacher of mathematics in a primary school.
Six units of study each of which focuses on effective teaching and learning in an area of mathematics.
- The National Numeracy Strategy approach to calculation

- Using PNS unit plans
- Using ICT in mathematics
- Improving the quality of teaching and learning during the plenary
- Models and images
The intention of the units of study is to support the learner in exploring teaching strategies and their implications for pupil learning.
