Yearly teaching programmes, shown below, are taken from the relevant section of the Framework for teaching mathematics: Reception to Year 6. The numbers, in brackets, are page references to the relevant supplement of examples in the Framework which you can download by clicking on an icon in the 'Downloads' box on the left of this page.
Adding and subtracting (p.14-17)
In practical activities and discussion:
- Begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting. (p.14)
- Find one more or one less than a number from 1 to 10. (p.14)
- Begin to relate addition to combining two groups of objects, counting all the objects;
extend to three groups of objects. (p.14)
- Begin to relate addition to counting on. (p.15)
- Begin to relate the addition of doubles to counting on. (p.15)
- Find a total by counting on when one group of objects is hidden. (p.15)
- Separate (partition) a given number of objects into two groups. (p.16)
- Select two groups of objects to make a given total. (p.16)
- Begin to relate subtraction to 'taking away' and counting how many are left. (p.16)
- Remove a smaller number from a larger and find how many are left by counting back from the larger number. (p.17)
- Begin to find out how many have been removed from a larger group of objects by counting up from a number. (p.17)
- Work out by counting how many more are needed to make a larger number. (p.17)
