Framework for teaching mathematics
Reception
Yearly teaching programmes, shown below, are taken from the relevant section of the Framework for teaching mathematics: Reception to Year 6. The numbers, in brackets, are page references to the relevant supplement of examples in the Framework which you can download by clicking on an icon in the 'Downloads' box on the left of this page.
Reasoning about numbers or shapes (p.18-19)
- Talk about, recognise and recreate simple patterns: for example, simple repeating or symmetrical patterns from different cultures. (p.18)
- Solve simple problems or puzzles in a practical context, and respond to 'What could we try next?' (p.18)
- Make simple estimates and predictions: for example, of the number of cubes that will fit in a box or strides across the room. (p.19)
- Sort and match objects, pictures or children themselves, justifying the decisions made. (p.19)
Problems involving 'real life' or money (p.20-21)
- Use developing mathematical ideas and methods to solve practical problems involving counting and comparing in a real or role play context. (p.20)
- Begin to understand and use the vocabulary related to money.
Sort coins, including the £1 and £2 coins, and use them in role play to pay and give change. (p.21)
