What is it?
This CD contains materials to help in the teaching of key areas of mathematics in Years 1 to 3, in particular by including the use of models and images. Video clips, showing teachers using models and images in their teaching, provide a focus for discussion for teachers and their colleagues.
The materials reflect six key areas which we have identified as essential prerequisites within the Framework's Year 1 to 3 teaching programmes for future learning in mathematics.
The six key areas are:
- ordering numbers;
- counting on and back;
- partitioning and recombining;
- addition/subtraction facts within 20;
- understanding the four operations;
- problem solving strategies.
Models and images charts Six models and images charts support the first five key areas listed above. The charts include a selection of models and images to help in teaching the key areas in a way that promotes and supports children's understanding.
On the back of the charts are:
- some potential difficulties children might have;
- examples of progression and application in years 4 to 6;
- space for teachers to record their own models and images.
The models and images charts can be downloaded from the downloads area below.
Unit Plans Selected Unit Plans are provided to exemplify the use of models and images on the charts. Some of these have further support sessions to provide additional help for those children who are falling behind.
Unit Plans can be downloaded from the Teaching Resources area of the Primary Strategy website. Select a year and term to find relevant titles.
Interactive Teaching Programs Each chart has a corresponding Interactive Teaching Program (ITP). These programs are designed to help teachers to incorporate the use of ICT into their teaching of mathematics and to use imagery in a way that can otherwise be difficult. They are simple programs and only take a few minutes to get to know.
