A guided reading session with three children using the non-fiction text, The Ice Cream Factory. The teacher used the session to make brief notes on what the children said. The general focus of the session was text structure and organisation (AF4). The teacher had prepared questions in advance to explore this AF.
In the course of this guided reading session, it is evident that Peter understands some elements of text organisation (e.g. 'heading and chart'). He is able to read aloud fluently at level 2, using appropriate strategies to decode words. He retrieves specific information directly from the text but does not give or justify opinions. Peter's reading and responses suggest evidence for a low level 2 attainment in AFs 2, 4 and 7, but secure level 2 in AF1.
