Early reading

This CPD theme is aimed specifically at schools that wish to address the teaching of early reading across the school or setting. It focuses on Year 1 but has clear links and activities relating to the Foundation Stage and reaching into Year 2.

The materials in this section have been designed to support teachers and practitioners in implementing the recommendations of the Rose Report. They incorporate what is meant by high-quality phonics teaching and its place within a rich and broad early years curriculum. They provide advice and guidance on pace and progression in the teaching of phonics and explain what is meant by the simple view of reading – the new conceptual framework for the teaching of reading.
