Improving writing day 1

This CPD theme is aimed specifically at schools that wish to address the teaching of writing and in particular, guided writing across the school. It is designed to allow the tailoring of the materials to cover Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5 or to combine these age ranges and cover writing across the primary age range. It is also supported by additional video material exemplifying the effective teaching of writing in Years 1, 3 and 5. There is also an accompanying booklet, which outlines key approaches and contains samples of children's writing linked to the video exemplars.

The CPD materials are organised into three sections:

  • CPD outlines - which contain CPD guidance or notes for Local Authorities and schools on improving writing and which could be used as a full day’s training, or broken into smaller sessions for delivery over time. This section also contains the outline for a school-based Professional Development Meeting linked to the CPD.
  • PowerPoints/presentation - which contain the presentation slides to support the delivery of the CPD outline.
  • Handouts/resources - which contain any related materials, including the video exemplification and the Improving writing - with a focus on guided writing booklet and linked handouts from the CPD outlines needed to run the CPD sessions or PDMs.
