Communication, language and literacy: By strand

The objectives for Communication, language and literacy are organised by strand. The objectives in each strand can be viewed for an identified year group or read across year groups to identify progression within each strand.

The majority of strands* cover objectives from Foundation Stage to Year 6 and Year 6 progression into Year 7. The objectives under Year 6 progression into Year 7 are in the main pitched around level 5 to help plan appropriately for children working at level 4 or 5 and to support transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3. The Early Learning Goals have been incorporated into the Foundation Stage objectives, with some additional objectives to support transition from the end of Foundation Stage into Year 1.

* Strand 5: Word recognition : decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) only covers objectives from Foundation Stage to the end of Key Stage 1 since the expectation is that, for the majority of children, these learning objectives will have been covered by the end of Year 2.
