Learning objectives

A clearer structure for teaching literacy has been provided by simplifying the structure of the objectives, with the identification of 12 strands of learning, giving a broad overview of the literacy curriculum in the primary phase. Learning objectives are aligned to the 12 strands to demonstrate progression in each strand.

These strands link directly to the Early Learning Goals and aspects of English in the National Curriculum. The organisation of the objectives into these 12 strands also supports alignment with the assessment focuses for reading and writing used in National Curriculum assessments. Covering these objectives will allow children to reach the Early Learning Goals for Communication, Language and Literacy and the appropriate National Curriculum levels for Key Stages 1 and 2. The objectives will be taught through the full range of texts described in the National Curriculum for English.

The twelve strands are as follows:

Speak and listen for a wide range of purposes in different contexts

  1. Speaking
  2. Listening and responding
  3. Group discussion and interaction
  4. Drama

Read and write for a range of purposes on paper and on screen

  1. Word recognition: decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)
  2. Word Structure and spelling
  3. Understanding and interpreting texts
  4. Engaging and responding to texts
  5. Creating and shaping texts
  6. Text structure and organisation
  7. Sentence structure and punctuation
  8. Presentation
