Group discussion and interaction

Most children learn to:

  • take different roles in groups to develop thinking and complete tasks
  • participate in conversations, making appropriate contributions building on others' suggestions and responses.

Group discussion and interaction is one of the 12 strands of learning. The objectives for group discussion and interaction can be read across year groups to identify progression within each strand. These objectives reflect end-of-year expectations for each of the year groups. They can be used to support planning to ensure that children make the expected progress over the year and across years. Covering these objectives will allow children to reach the Early Learning Goals for communication, language and literacy and the appropriate National Curriculum levels at Key Stages 1 and 2. Use the navigation bar on the left to visit the learning objectives for group discussion and interaction from Foundation Stage through to Year 6 and Year 6 progression into Year 7.
