Understanding and interpreting texts

Most children learn to:

  • retrieve, select and describe information, events or ideas
  • deduce, infer and interpret information, events or ideas
  • use syntax, context, word structures and origins to develop their understanding of word meanings
  • identify and comment on the structure and organisation of texts
  • explain and comment on writers' use of language, including vocabulary, grammatical and literary features.

Understanding and interpreting texts is one of the 12 strands of learning. The objectives for understanding and interpreting texts can be read across year groups to identify progression within each strand. These objectives reflect end-of-year expectations for each of the year groups. They can be used to support planning to ensure that children make the expected progress over the year and across years. Covering these objectives will allow children to reach the Early Learning Goals for communication, language and literacy and the appropriate National Curriculum levels at Key Stages 1 and 2. Use the navigation bar on the left to visit the learning objectives for understanding and interpreting texts from Foundation Stage through to Year 6 and Year 6 progression into Year 7.
