Phase 1
Identify the main events in a traditional tale and sequence events using the headings Beginning, Middle, End (teacher observation, self-assessment).
Phase 2
Retell a traditional tale in their own words for a group of children; speak audibly and include some story language (teacher observation, feedback from other children).
Phase 3
Describe the behaviour, appearance and characteristics of a particular character in talk, pictures and written captions (teacher observation, marking).
Phase 4
Listen attentively to a story on audio tape or video and talk about how it has been presented (questioning as part of group and class discussion).
Phase 5
Read a playscript, adapting voice for different characters (feedback from group, teacher observation).
Phase 6
Write their own version of a traditional story with events organised into beginning, middle and end, using complete sentences (marking, peer assessment, self-assessment).
