Phase 1
Say whether a text is non-fiction or fiction; generate questions about a curricular area and use index in information texts to help find answers (teacher observation).
Phase 2
Know and use language features and appropriate vocabulary in an information text - for example impersonal present tense, specialist vocabulary - in speaking and simple written sentences (teacher observation, feedback against agreed success criteria).
Phase 3
Apply the above in writing a page for an information book about a well-known subject (marking and feedback against agreed success criteria).
Note: In repeating the unit, it will be appropriate to extend expectations for children.
