Year 2 and Year 3 Narrative - Mixed age planning

Traditional Stories

This is a mixed age planning unit for year 2 and year 3. The unit has two alternative outcomes. The children can work towards their own written version of a traditional narrative or create a digital text combining words, images and sounds using presentation software. Extension for Y3 pupils includes the increased development and more precise use of effective vocabulary to create impact for the reader and building text cohesion through the use of connectives.

Progression in Y2 and Y3

In their own reading, children will become more aware of meanings beyond the literal and will being to make inferences independently. Opportunities for role play will enable children to empathise with characters and see things from the point of view of others. As children become more aware of the needs of the reader, teachers will need to help children consider the ways in which to guide the reader to follow events, and how the use of connectives supports this.

Phase 1
Read and compare alternative versions of traditional stories. Discuss opposing characters from the narrative. Discuss and compose dialogue for different characters.

Phase 2
Discuss how characters behave if their roles in a narrative are exchanged. Plan an alternative traditional story. Write a short alternative traditional story using connectives to indicate time and tension.

Phase 3
Discuss how words, sounds and images can convey different information to a reader. Demonstrate how images and sounds can tell a reader a different version of a story. Children create their own digital story adding dialogue and images to a written narrative.
