Additional text-based unit – Really looking - Learning outcomes

Phase 1

  • Children understand that they should 'Look and leave' when observing minibeasts in their natural habitat.
  • Children appreciate the ways in which humans have a responsibility towards all animals.
  • Children can identify wildlife in their local area and know how to protect it.

Phase 2

  • Children are able to identify descriptive words and phrases from a range of poems and their own experiences.
  • Children are able to express their opinions about the language used by a poet and the intended impact of the language.

Phase 3

  • Children can make adventurous word choices appropriate to the audience and purpose of the poem.

Phase 4

  • Children can use precise vocabulary to describe specific aspects of a creature in order to create a feeling of wonder and respect in the reader.
  • Children are able to express opinions about the layout of a poem on the page for best effect on the reader.
