Year 4, 5 and 6 Poetry - Mixed age planning - Choral and performance

This unit is based on the Year 5 poetry, Unit 3 (choral and performance) incorporating objectives from Years 4 and 6 to support mixed-age groups. All children will work in small groups towards writing and performing their own performance poem, which will be videoed or recorded by their peers and evaluated against agreed success criteria. Extension for the more able includes the freedom to choose their own poem structure and the inclusion of more performance elements.

Progression in Years 4, 5 and 6

Children will know how writers use figurative and expressive language and will be able to infer meanings, discussing their reading with others. They will be able to recognise the effect of different performance elements on the text and audience response.

In writing, children will be able to develop and refine ideas, create effects and reflect critically on their own and others' work.

Children will be able to present their work in a variety of ways and to different audiences.

Build in previous learning by checking that children can:

  • discuss their responses to a range of poetry they have read
  • use actions, voices and sound effects to add to a performance.

More able children can:

  • identify and discuss various features of a poem, including structure and organisation of the text and the way language is used to create effects on the reader.

Phase 1

Listen to and/or watch examples of performance poetry and identify performance elements.

Phase 2

Children rehearse and perform poetry, evaluating their own performance and the performance of others.

Phase 3

Children write own performance poetry, rehearse and perform it for recording. Children evaluate their own poem and performance and that of others.
