Note: Children working significantly above or below age-related expectations will need differentiated support, which may include tracking forward or back in terms of learning objectives. EAL learners should be expected to work within the overall expectations for their year group. For further advice see the progression strands and hyperlinks to useful sources of practical support.
Phase 1: Listening; evaluation (3 days)
Teaching content:
- Collect a range of examples from radio or TV of non-fiction material presented from prepared scripts, for example advertisement, news, natural history documentary.
- Review these examples with children and ensure that they understand that these performances are scripted rather like plays, even though they are not dramatic performances.
- Consider the range of purposes met by the examples reviewed, for example to inform (news), to persuade (advertisement), to instruct (home tuition foreign language CD).
- Provide a spelling session over this period.
Learning outcome:
- Children can recognise the use of a script in a range of broadcast material and can identify the broad purposes of that material.
