How did the researchers collect their data?
The researchers collected evidence using a variety of methods including:
- questionnaire surveys of ninety schools. Thirty-one completed questionnaires were received from schools that had used single-sex teaching at some time over the past three years;
- twenty-three follow up telephone interviews were held with schools expressing a willingness to be contacted further; and
- in-depth visits were made to another two schools where interviews were conducted with senior managers, other staff and students.
Most of the evidence collated came from:
- students in Years 9-11;
- English, science and modern languages subjects; and
- schools where single sex teaching was less than four years old (only eight schools had used the approach for longer).
