Unit 03: Animals and us
Section 1: Key stage 1 - We all have basic needs

Objectives

Children should learn:
  • that all humans have needs
  • that all animals have needs
  • in group discussions, to take different views into account while developing their ideas

Activities

Outcomes

Children:
  • In a circle, ask each child to say what they think they need in order to be healthy and happy. Then ask the children to discuss, in pairs, what they think the basic needs of all humans are, eg water, food, clothing, shelter, friendship. The children share their views with the circle.
  • Introduce three or four different toy animals into the circle, and ask the children to identify the needs of each animal. What does the animal need in order to be healthy and happy? Make a shared list of the basic needs all animals have in common, and then a list of the similarities and differences between animals' and humans' basic needs.
  • identify and describe a list of basic human needs
  • describe the basic needs of a specific animal
  • discuss and develop ideas in groups

Points to note

  • Some children may need help in understanding the difference between wants and needs.
  • Point out the similarities between human and animal needs.
  • Link with English: En1 S&L 3c, 3d in the key stage 1 programme of study.
  • Link with science: Sc2 2b in the key stage 1 programme of study.
