Resources

Resources include:

  • toy animals and animal accessories, eg collars, leads, food bowls
  • photographs of different animals
  • recent media articles about animal welfare issues
  • Introducing Citizenship: a practical handbook for primary schools (published by the Citizenship Foundation; includes the story 'William and the guinea pig')
  • useful websites, eg
    • www.rspca.org.uk (for educational resources, information and advice on animal welfare issues, and details of RSPCA branches. There is also a news and campaigns section)
    • www.rspb.org.uk/community (provides information and ideas for teachers and suggested lesson plans, including 'How do birds use the school grounds?')
    • www.wwflearning.co.uk (for information, activities and resources that support education for sustainable development)
    • www.ncdl.org.uk (National Canine Defence League; for resources that explore issues of responsibility towards animals)
    • www.childrens-express.org (an online newspaper for young people, with articles and reports written by 8- to 18-year-olds)
NB: care should be taken when encouraging children to access websites
