Section 2: Key stage 1 - How do we look after animals?
Children:
- know how to take care of an animal
- write about their ideas using sentences with a clear structure
- demonstrate awareness of the responsibilities they would have if they were caring for a pet
- describe the needs of wild animals and how these can be met
- understand that we can help wild animals by using thoughtful and responsible behaviour
- recognise why rules are important for wildlife areas

Section 3: Key stage 2 - Who else looks after animals?
Children:
- identify different types of animals
- appreciate the responsibility humans have to help keep animals healthy, and know that it is against the law to mistreat an animal
- know and describe what a voluntary/charitable organisation is and understand the role of a volunteer
- understand that there are laws to protect both animals and people
- appreciate that there are problems in the UK regarding pet ownership, and that even though some people might want a pet, they would not make suitable owners
- know the importance of choosing the right pet, and understand the responsibility involved in providing a suitable home for a pet

Section 4: Key stage 2 - Taking responsibility - what can we do?
Children:
- scan texts for information prior to more detailed reading
- draw on what they know and have found out to contribute ideas and opinions to a discussion about an animal welfare issue
- listen to the views of others
- recognise some simple actions they can take to improve animal welfare
