Children: |
- Ask the children to identify the fruit and vegetables that are pulled out of a shopping bag. Discuss how and where the produce was grown. How do we get these fruits and vegetables? Show the children a variety of harvest pictures and introduce harvesting words, eg cutting, picking, gathering, collecting, netting.
- Teach the children a traditional children's harvest hymn or song. Ask the children to draw or paint their favourite fruit and vegetable.
- use a range of appropriate words to talk about harvest
- communicate their ideas about harvest using pictures
Points to note |
- For many children this may be their first experience of harvest festivals.
- These teaching activities focus on traditional ideas of harvest in the British countryside - they should be changed or expanded to suit the context of the class, eg harvest of the sea, harvest in other countries.
- Although harvest may not be part of children's experience in urban areas this is an opportunity to explore where our food comes from.
