Section 2: What is a Christian harvest festival?

QCA

Objectives

Children should learn:
  • that some Christians like to say thank you to God for the harvest
  • that there are times in their own lives when they want to say thank you

Activities

Outcomes

Children:
  • Show the children some pictures of Christian harvest festivals. Discuss how and why Christians like to say thank you to God for the harvest.
  • Ask the children to listen to (or learn) a harvest hymn.
  • Ask the children to look at the words of a harvest prayer.
  • Introduce the idea of thankfulness and the different ways that we 'say' thank you. Ask the children what they say thank you for and to whom.
  • show their knowledge and understanding of harvest by talking about how and why some Christians like to say thank you to God for the harvest by holding a harvest festival
  • identify occasions when they want to say thank you for something, and talk about the reasons why

Points to note

  • Use pictures of Christian harvest festivals from around the world.
  • The order of the lessons could be altered to suit the timing of the school's harvest festival and the date of Sukkot.
