Unit RA: What are harvest festivals?
Section 3: What will happen in our school?

QCA

Objectives

Children should learn:
  • about the term 'festival'
  • about their school's harvest festival

Activities

Outcomes

Children:
  • Talk to the children about their school's harvest festival. What is the theme? What are we saying thank you for? Where will the festival be held?
  • Introduce the idea of a festival as a special celebration that has a special religious meaning to some people. Talk about preparations, decorations and invitations. Ask the children to help with the preparations for the school's harvest festival, eg make a collage on the theme of the festival.
  • show an understanding of their school's harvest festival by explaining why it is being held
  • communicate their understanding of what a festival is by making a collage or picture

Points to note

  • This is an opportunity to make a school's harvest festival more meaningful to its youngest children.
  • This is an RE lesson and is not an act of worship. Not all children can participate in an act of worship.
  • If the school is not holding a harvest festival, this lesson could be left out or adapted to suit the class.
