Unit RA: What are harvest festivals?
Section 4: What is the Jewish festival of Sukkot?

QCA

Objectives

Children should learn:
  • that Jewish people hold a festival of thanksgiving called Sukkot
  • that Jewish people give thanks to God by building a Succah and by sharing their food with others

Activities

Outcomes

Children:
  • Look at pictures of the festival of Sukkot and discuss the festival and its origins with the children. Why do Jewish people make a Succah? What were they originally? How are they made today?
  • Tell the story of the Israelites in the wilderness. Help the children to build a Succah in the classroom and decorate it with leaves and fruit.
  • Discuss how Jewish people might invite others to share a meal in their Succah, and explain why they do this. Ask the children to invite guests to their classroom Succah. Talk about times when they share meals with others.
  • explain that Jewish people say thank you to God by celebrating Sukkot
  • explain that Jewish people like to show their thankfulness by sharing a meal with others in their Succah
  • make connections with their own experiences of sharing meals

Points to note

  • As there is a great deal of content in this lesson, it could be extended over two lessons.
  • If the children already have a knowledge of Sukkot, or if the teacher wishes to extend it further, the four plants of the Sukkat (lulav, hadaseium, aravot and etrog) could be introduced alongside the custom of waving and shaking.
