RE at key stage 3 (Year 7)
Unit 7D: Who was Gotama Buddha?
Section 2: Why did Gotama Buddha leave home?
|
|
Objectives |
| Children should learn: |
- what 'renunciation' means
- to identify situations that lead people to ask ultimate questions
- to know and understand the reasons why the Buddha left home
|
Activities |
|
Outcomes |
|
Children: |
- Ask pupils to define in pairs 'dissatisfaction' and to give an example of something someone could be dissatisfied with. Feed back to the whole group. Turning to the life of the Buddha, ask pupils to think of any reason Gotama had to be dissatisfied with his life inside the palace. Cover the reasons Gotama had for wanting to leave the palace and visit the town, what he encountered there and how this led to his 'renunciation' and journey to try to find an answer to the question
Why do people suffer?
- Identify word links,
eg renunciation/renounce and annunciation/announce.
- Ask pupils to produce a collage of images from newspapers and magazines that make people ask ultimate questions,
eg Why do bad things happen?
|
|
- explain what renunciation means and recognise the link to the word renounce
- explain why the Buddha left home to search for truth
- identify situations that give rise to ultimate questions being asked
|
|
Points to note |
- The collage could be linked to art and design work.
- Homework: pupils could be asked to formulate a short questionnaire asking people why they think bad things happen in the world. They could use a spreadsheet to record and present the data.
- Language for learning: pupils might reflect on the special and ordinary meanings of words such as renounce and announce (with renunciation and annunciation).
Does having different versions help or hinder understanding?
