Objectives

Children should learn:
  • the main Buddhist teachings
  • to understand what Dhamma means
  • to evaluate the Buddhist concept of wisdom

Activities

Outcomes

Children:
  • Ask pupils to suggest names of people they think are wise, with a reason or example to support their choice. Then ask pupils to look at a quotation from the Buddha on wisdom, and explain what the Buddha meant by wisdom. Would the people you thought of at the start of the lesson fit Buddha's belief about wisdom?
  • Teach pupils about the Buddhist scriptures, focusing on the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Ask pupils to write down the information, giving a practical example for each part of the Noble Eightfold Path. Copy a picture of a Buddhist wheel and explain what it symbolises. Which is the most interesting teaching and why?
  • explain what is contained in the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path
  • evaluate the Buddhist concept of wisdom
