Art and design at key stage 3

QCA

Sequencing the units

About the units

There are nine units covering specific knowledge, skills and understanding, and a generic unit on visiting a museum, gallery or site that can be used in conjunction with the other units. Together these form a complete long-term plan for key stage 3.

Time allocation

Each unit is designed to be taught in 10-15 hours. This time allocation is based on recommendations in the 1995 review of the curriculum and QCA's research on the range of times allocated by schools to art and design. The times are indicative only; they do not constitute a recommended time for art and design.

Coverage of the programme of study

The units cover the programme of study for key stage 3 art and design. However, the programme sets out a minimum entitlement for art and design, so schools are free to supplement the units and decide the depth of coverage. Teachers may need to adjust the units to suit pupils' needs and the time available.

Teaching and learning approaches

The units suggest a range of approaches to teaching and learning, including opportunities for pupils to:

  • respond to a range of starting points, including their ideas and experiences, natural and made objects and environments, and the work of artists, craftspeople or designers;
  • apply their learning, either on their own or in collaboration with others;
  • discuss and evaluate their own and others' work through whole-class, paired and small-group discussions;
  • reflect on their own learning and adapt and develop their work.
The approaches may need to be adapted to meet pupils' needs.

Long-term plans

The scheme of work indicates how the units can be organised into a long-term plan. This is only one model. It is up to schools to decide whether they wish to use this model in full, or to customise individual units or combinations of units to suit their own circumstances.

The sequence of units in the scheme of work is based on the following three key ideas about planning work in art, craft and design.

1. Extending the breadth of content in art and design by providing opportunities for pupils to:
  • respond to a range of personal, social and environmental issues within the broad themes of themselves and their experiences, and natural and made objects and environments;
  • work individually and collaboratively on two- and three-dimensional projects on different scales, using a range of materials and processes for practical work in art, craft and design;
  • engage with art, craft and design in a variety of genres, styles and traditions from a range of historical, social and cultural contexts.
2. Increasing pupils' depth of knowledge and understanding of:
  • visual and tactile elements of line, shape, pattern, texture, colour, tone, form and space;
  • the materials and processes used by artists, craftspeople and designers;
  • the role and function of art, craft and design in different times and cultures.
3. Improving the quality of pupils' response and outcomes through developing:
  • their practical and technical skills;
  • their ability to reflect on, adapt and improve their work, and make independent choices and decisions about its purpose and meaning;
  • their ability to critically evaluate the work of artists, craftspeople and designers and to apply their learning in the context of their own ideas, methods and approaches.
See Principles for constructing a scheme of work in art and design for more information.
