The main aim of this unit is to ensure that pupils make a smooth transition from key stage 3 to key stage 4 and Entry level, GCSE and GNVQ courses.
In this unit, pupils tackle one of two design and make assignments (DMAs). The first is on the theme 'Inclusive designing or third age design', in which pupils design and make a product to appeal to older people, developing empathy with those who will use their designs. The second DMA option is 'A negotiated project linked to an area of personal or class choice', which helps pupils to bring together what they have learnt during the key stage. Where possible, pupils should carry out a task that reflects their own interests, making effective use of visits, designers-in-residence and/or community projects. This could be an individual, group or class project.
Pupils gain the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to carry out the DMA successfully through product evaluation activities and focused practical tasks. They:
- reflect on their achievements during the key stage, before embarking on the key stage 4 course
- consider how to improve their performance, reflect on their progress in D&T, and carry out a self-assessment to identify their strengths and weaknesses
There are also opportunities for pupils to:
- carry out projects based on their interests or take part in a class project
- work with others and make effective use of visits, designers-in-residence and community projects
- design for a client, developing their understanding of the effect that a client's context can have on designing
- justify their choices in terms of values (their own and those they have learnt to respect in others)
- consider the impact of their designing and making in a wider context
